Headspace vs Calm for Students: Which Fits Your Needs?
For Headspace vs Calm, start with the listening task and the access you qualify for. Headspace publishes guided meditation and sleep audio alongside a verified-student offer; Calm publishes meditation, Sleep Stories and limited free content. Sample the kind of session you would use before paying for a library. This researched comparison does not establish that either app works better for exam anxiety. [1] [2] [3]
A side-by-side starting point
Checked on 18 October 2026 from official English-language pages. Country, eligibility and purchase route affect access and pricing.
| Decision | Headspace | Calm |
|---|---|---|
| Guided practice | Meditation material, including a public Basics sample. [1] | Guided meditations and daily sessions in Premium. [3] |
| Evening listening | Sleepcasts, music and other audio experiences. [1] | Sleep Stories and music; some selected content is free. [3] |
| Before subscribing | Sample public audio and check whether you have sponsored access. [1] [4] | Try the limited free content or check an existing benefit. [3] |
| Student offer | A published verified-student annual offer for eligible adults; country lists conflict. [2] | No universal current student offer verified in this comparison. |
| Account age | General adult access, with specific younger-user routes in its terms. [4] | 16+; parent or guardian agreement is required below the local age of majority. [9] |
| Exact price | Check local checkout; standard-plan total was not verified. | Provider says pricing varies by country and currency. [5] |
| Main reason to pause | A discount is useful only if the sessions fit and you qualify. | A large library adds little if you only use a free session. |
What we compared
We compared published meditation/sleep content, free and student access, billing and privacy information. We did not subscribe, use the apps, compare narrators or test downloaded playback, captions, screen-reader support or sleep outcomes.
The earlier individual reviews describe each product in more detail. This page uses fresh source checks for the decision between them; it does not treat either earlier verdict as evidence of current prices or superiority.
Choose one listening task before choosing an app
If you want an introduction to guided meditation, try a beginner session and see whether the instructions and voice are comfortable. Headspace's public subscription page includes a Basics sample. Calm also offers guided meditation; this is not an exclusive feature of one product. [1] [3]
If you want audio when revision ends, compare a sleep story or soundscape with the kind of listening you already enjoy. Both publish sleep content. Preference matters here: a voice one person finds soothing may keep another person engaged in the story. [1] [3]
Our suggestion is to choose one short session for a defined moment, such as after putting your notes away. You can decide against both if choosing and browsing becomes another task. Buying more content is not necessary to make a sensible evening routine.
Student access is not the same as school-age access
Headspace's student page describes an offer for verified post-secondary or university students aged 18 and over. It lists US$9.99 per year among its published student prices, but its hero, FAQ and separate help page give inconsistent country lists. Check the current verification route for your country rather than relying on one global list. We did not complete verification or checkout. [2]
Its terms describe general adult access and specific exceptions for younger users through named offerings. Do not assume that being a school student qualifies you for the university discount or a personal adult account. [4]
Calm's terms require users to be at least 16. If you are below the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to the terms. Content made for children does not by itself establish that a child can open an account. [9]
For Calm, this review did not verify a universal student price. Its documentation describes several other routes to Premium, including employer benefits and selected partnerships. Check any benefit you already have before starting a second subscription. The existence of a partnership does not mean your institution participates. [3]
Compare the whole payment, including renewal
Calm distinguishes limited free content from Premium, which unlocks its library. A free trial temporarily unlocks Premium; it is different from staying on the basic free access. Exact content can vary by language and region. [3]
Headspace's student terms describe annual reverification. If student status is not verified, the stated sequence is a discounted alumni year followed by standard annual pricing. That makes the next renewal amount part of the comparison, even if the first student year looks inexpensive. [2]
Calm says annual plans are charged upfront and monthly/annual plans renew unless cancelled. Headspace also describes automatic conversion of eligible trials and renewing subscriptions. Check the total, currency, tax, conversion date and cancellation route on your actual offer. No standard-price checkout comparison was completed here. [6] [4]
Calm's terms say to cancel at least 24 hours before the current subscription period ends, using the website or the third party through which you subscribed. Check the same conditions for any promotional trial before starting it. [9]
A practical comparison might be: existing benefit at no extra charge, then usable free content, then the full price for the sessions you want. That is a budgeting suggestion, not a claim that the cheapest option will suit everyone.
Check privacy and the features you depend on
Both providers publish privacy policies covering information supplied to them and information about use of their services. Headspace describes device and usage information; Calm describes session activity and optional mood or reflection entries. This comparison does not audit either company's security or declare one more private. [7] [8]
Before entering personal reflections, read the policy and check the choices relevant to your account. If you use access through an organisation, check its additional notices too. We cannot infer what your institution receives from the existence of a benefit.
If you need a particular language, captions, assistive-technology support or reliable offline audio, check that exact session and device before paying. Those are material differences for your use even when both libraries sound attractive; they were not tested here.
Which should you choose?
Consider Headspace if a sample of its guided approach suits you and your verified access makes the full renewal terms reasonable. Consider Calm if the specific meditation or sleep audio you want is available on a free or paid route that fits your budget. You can use neither and still take breaks, prepare for tomorrow and ask for support.
For minutes before an exam, a simple technique may be more convenient than opening a new library. If distress is disrupting daily life, app selection is not the only next step; speak to someone who can help you consider support.
