Headspace review for students: cost and exam stress fit
Headspace is a subscription app for guided meditation, sleep audio, and focus music. There is no free version of the app after the trial, but eligible students aged 18 or over at a college or university in seven countries can get an annual plan for $9.99 in the US. That price later steps up, so check the renewal terms. Research on Headspace with students shows small or mixed benefits, mostly for people who kept using it. It suits older students who already like guided audio; school students and anyone on a tight budget have free options. [1] [2]
Headspace at a glance
Details checked on 21 September 2026 from Headspace's website, help centre, and US App Store listing. Prices and offers vary by country.
| Question | What we found |
|---|---|
| Who is it for? | The app is rated 13+ on the App Store, and Headspace says it is not intended for anyone under 13. The student plan is only for students aged 18 or over. [3] [5] |
| Which devices? | iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.6 or later), and Android. [3] |
| Is it free? | Not beyond the free trial. Headspace points to free material on YouTube, Radio Headspace, and its articles. [4] |
| What does it cost? | In the US, $69.99 a year with a 14-day trial, or $12.99 a month with a 7-day trial. The student plan is $9.99 a year. [1] [2] |
| How long does setup take? | Create an account and start a trial. Student verification adds a check through a company called SheerID. Setup time was not measured here. |
| Main limitation | It costs money every year, and the student price does not last forever. |
How we put this review together
On 21 September 2026 we read Headspace's plans page, student plan page and terms, help centre articles on free content and cancelling, its privacy policy, and its US App Store listing. We also read published research on Headspace with university students.
This is a review of published information, not a hands-on test. We did not start a trial, verify student status, or use the app. The recommendations are our assessment of how the published features fit exam revision.
What does the Headspace subscription include?
The subscription unlocks the app's library: guided meditations, sleepcasts and sleep sounds, focus music, short morning videos, and mindful movement. The student page describes more than 1,000 meditations and mindfulness resources. [1] [2]
The app store listing also mentions mental health coaching and therapy. These are separate services with their own subscriptions, so do not assume the app plan includes them. [3] [6]
For exam season, the useful parts are short sessions you can fit between revision blocks and audio you can play at night. Headspace's own sample sessions include a 5-minute introduction to meditation and a 3-minute guided meditation. [1] [2]
Who can get the student plan?
Headspace says its student plan is for students aged 18 or over at a post-secondary program or university in the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Portugal, and Spain. It lists the annual price as $9.99 in the US, £7.99 in the UK, €8.99 in the eurozone, and $12.99 in Australia and Canada. [2]
You verify your student status through SheerID. If instant checking fails, you upload a document such as an enrolment letter or class schedule. The terms say your name, college or university, email address, country, and date of birth are shared with SheerID. [2] [7]
School students, including sixth formers and high school students, do not qualify. Neither do students in other countries, even if they are at university.
What happens when the student discount ends?
The student price is the first of three stages. Headspace asks you to verify your student status again each year. When you graduate or verification fails, you move to one year of an alumni plan at a smaller discount; the student page says 40% off. After that, you pay the standard annual price. [2] [7]
You can cancel at any time. Under the student terms, cancelling takes effect at the end of the current discount period, so you keep access until then. [7]
Is Headspace worth paying for?
At the standard US price, the annual plan works out to about $5.83 a month, against $12.99 for the monthly plan. On the US plans page, the annual plan came with a 14-day free trial and the monthly plan with 7 days. The annual subscription renews automatically. [1]
Headspace says subscriptions bought on its website are non-refundable, though it will look at special circumstances. Purchases through Apple or Google Play follow the store's own refund rules. Cancel where you subscribed: on the Headspace website, or in your Apple or Google Play subscription settings. [6]
If you are unsure whether you will keep using it, set a reminder before the trial ends. A subscription you stop opening in the middle of exams is money you could spend elsewhere.
| Plan (US prices) | Price | Free trial |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $12.99 a month | 7 days |
| Annual | $69.99 a year | 14 days |
| Student (eligible students 18+) | $9.99 a year | Not stated on the student page |
Does Headspace help with student stress?
The evidence is modest. In a trial with 250 first-year university students, those given Headspace for a semester did not clearly report less distress than students waiting for it. Most used it rarely, about eight sessions on average. Students who used it more often reported small improvements, but that group chose to keep going, so it does not show the app caused the change. [8]
A 2022 review found 14 randomised trials of Headspace. Results for stress and anxiety were mixed, many studies were too small to detect modest effects, and half reported a conflict of interest involving the company, most often free premium access for participants. [9]
None of these studies tested exam stress, exam results, or school students. Meditation may help some people feel calmer, but treat the app as one option to try, not a proven treatment for test anxiety.
What about privacy?
Headspace's App Store privacy label lists product interaction and advertising data as data that may be used to track you. Data linked to you includes health and fitness information, purchases, location, contact details, identifiers, and search history. [3]
Its privacy policy, effective 30 March 2026, says Headspace does not sell personal information for payment. It also says it shares limited personal information with advertising partners for targeted advertising, which some US privacy laws count as a "sale" or "sharing". You can opt out through Sharing Settings on the website or My Data in the app. [5]
When we checked, a banner on the Headspace website said the company Sword is acquiring Headspace. Ownership changes can lead to policy changes, so check the privacy policy again before you subscribe. [2]
What are the free alternatives?
Headspace itself publishes free meditations on YouTube and Radio Headspace. Calm has a free tier of meditations and some sleep audio. Slow breathing or a short grounding exercise costs nothing and needs no account. [4]
If money is tight or you are under 18, try free options first. They will show you whether guided audio suits you before you pay.
Who should use Headspace?
A short summary, based on published information rather than our own use:
- Consider the student plan if you are 18 or over at a college or university in an eligible country and already like guided audio.
- Before paying, note the renewal date and what the price becomes after the student and alumni stages.
- Skip it if you are at school, if a subscription would add money worries, or if free audio already works for you.
