What does the ISI measure? Insomnia and exam sleep problems

The ISI measures perceived insomnia severity and its impact. It helps describe a sleep concern, but it does not identify its cause, measure exam readiness, or replace a clinical sleep assessment.

What kind of sleep problem is this questionnaire about?

Its focus includes difficulty getting to sleep, disrupted sleep, and waking earlier than wanted, alongside your satisfaction and the impact you associate with your sleep. Those themes are broader than simply counting hours.

For a student, a useful description might be: “I leave time to sleep, but I am awake thinking about tomorrow, and I struggle to follow lectures.” Another might be: “My sleep timing changed during revision.” These examples illustrate information worth discussing; neither is a diagnosis.

Does a high ISI score explain why I cannot sleep?

No. The total does not allocate points to causes. You cannot read a result as a percentage caused by exams, caffeine, health, or another concern.

A clinician may ask about your medical history, medicines, sleep schedule, and symptoms suggesting other sleep conditions. The purpose is to understand the wider picture rather than assume every sleep complaint is insomnia.

Is sleeping too little the same as insomnia?

There is an important distinction between having too little opportunity to sleep and having difficulty sleeping despite an adequate opportunity. A packed timetable can leave little room for rest; a questionnaire score should not make that constraint disappear.

Write down what actually happens. “I work until midnight and travel to class at six” conveys something different from “I am in bed for a full night but frequently cannot sleep.” If both happen, describe both. This makes a support conversation more useful than choosing a single label.

ISI versus a sleep diary or sleep tracker

The ISI summarises your experience across a period. A diary records a sequence of nights and days. A tracker offers device-generated estimates. They answer different questions, so agreement is not required for your concern to be worth discussing.

For example, an overall total will not show whether problems happened mainly before early exams, after late shifts, or throughout the week. Brief dated notes can preserve those details. Avoid treating a device reading as a verdict that overrides how you feel or function.

ISI versus GAD-7 and PSS-10

Choose according to the concern you want to describe. These tools have different questions and scoring systems; their totals are not interchangeable.

Can the ISI predict my exam performance?

No result on this scale tells you what grade you will receive. It does not assess knowledge, preparation, or the suitability of an academic course.

Use it to support a conversation about wellbeing. For example, requesting a meeting about difficulties attending morning classes is a concrete next step. Deciding that a score proves you cannot pass an exam goes beyond what the questionnaire measures.

This page is educational. A questionnaire score cannot establish a diagnosis or explain the cause of your symptoms. If you are struggling, speak with a counselor or healthcare professional, whatever your score.
